Theta Decay: How Time Works in Your Favor

What Is Theta Decay?

Theta measures how much value an option loses each day due to the passage of time. As a covered call seller, theta is your primary profit engine — every day that passes, the call you sold becomes cheaper.

If a call option has a theta of -0.05, it loses $5 per day in value (per contract). As the seller, you gain that $5 each day. Over 30 days, theta decay alone could erase $150 of the option's value — money that stays in your pocket.

Theta is always negative for option buyers and always positive for option sellers. This is why covered call selling is often called a "positive theta" strategy.

The Theta Decay Curve

Theta decay is not linear — it accelerates as expiration approaches:

• 60+ DTE: Slow decay, roughly 1-2% of value per day • 45 DTE: Moderate decay picking up speed • 30 DTE: Noticeable acceleration • 14 DTE: Rapid decay, especially for OTM options • 7 DTE: Maximum decay rate • Final day: Any remaining time value evaporates

This curve is why the 30-45 DTE range is optimal for selling covered calls. You enter when decay is accelerating and capture the most valuable portion of the theta curve. Selling at 60+ DTE means sitting through slow early decay; selling at 7 DTE means tiny absolute premiums.

Maximizing Theta in Your Favor

Strategies to maximize theta income:

1. Sell at 30-45 DTE: Enter when theta acceleration begins 2. Close at 50-80% of max profit: Don't hold to expiration for the last few dollars. Close when you've captured most of the premium and re-sell a new call. 3. Sell OTM options: OTM options are 100% time value. They decay to zero if the stock stays below the strike. 4. Use Premium Per Day (PPD): Compare options across different DTEs. PPD normalizes for time and shows which expiration gives the most income per day. 5. Sell on Fridays: Weekend theta decay benefits sellers — options lose value over the weekend even though the market is closed.

Covered Call Pro calculates PPD for every trade, making it easy to find the most theta-efficient opportunities across all stocks and expirations.
